Per-pupil spending can vary drastically between school districts, with affluent suburban districts often outspending their neighbors by significant margins. The argument makes intrinsic sense to many: if one school district spends significantly more educating its students, then of course those students will perform better academically. Existing research on the topic, however, paints a muddier picture.

This year marks the first under the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, an overhaul of the tax code that resulted in lower individual income tax rates, a doubled standard deduction and the elimination of personal exemptions. For the new year, the IRS has bumped up the individual income tax brackets, adjusting them for inflation. Personal exemptions, which were eliminated from through as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, will remain at zero.

Movements in average weekly earnings can be affected by changes in both the level of earnings per employee and in the composition of the labour force. Factors which can contribute to compositional change include variations in the proportion of full-time, part-time, casual and junior employees; variations in the occupational distribution within and across industries; and variations in the distribution of employment between industries.
